After some rain, and a lot of traffic, I made it up to the debut of the fabulous Zoe Strauss exhibition at Silverstein tonight. The show was fantastic, she hung a ton of work, and even had one section of the show dedicated to her I95 project with the photographs hung salon style with push pins.

It was great to see the work represented like this, but it was also interesting to see it pushed up to a large scale. The scale allowed for a certain amount of presence and power that is inherent in it already, but is more accessible at that size.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this show was seeing her photographs in the "white box." I had commented after seeing them under I95 in South Philly that "The work seemed to take on a new dimension, and I felt more moved by her imagery then I ever have before." That impression was not stripped away by the gallery setting, but it did make the work seem less immediate, and a little removed. However Zoe won me over with the snack cakes (which like a good mother she proceeded to encourage me to take some for the road).

I realize at the end of this post that I have had a lot of Zoe on the blog in it's short 2 month lifespan (1, 2, 3, 4) but that is just because Zoe ROCKS!

Justin,
Good to see you. Sorry I was a sniffling, sweating, coughing mess. It felt like my head was wrapped in multiple layers of wet gauze. Thankfully, I feel much better today. Perhaps the bourbon really helped.
Zoe does rock!
Talk to you soon,
Jason
You are awesome. thanks for coming.
That and Robin Rhode's show Made my Saturday afternoon in Chelsea worthwile. As someone who isn't too familiar with her work, I found it a really refreshing break from the monotone nature of what i usually see in and around those parts.
Reminded me why I used to prowl the streets with a 35 and 800speed film, and why perhaps, it would'nt be a half bad idea to do that more often.
Good work.
happy good looking group.
